Edition 21
Your weekly |
The week in dogs, fetched for you.
Good morning, dog lover.
Your dog may consider dinner portions and sleeping arrangements
settled matters. We thought they deserved a second look.
This week’s edition brings a little science to those everyday
negotiations, alongside a daycare escape artist, an unusual job
listing, and a senior dog whose next chapter was worth waiting for.
Make yourself comfortable, we’ve saved you a spot.
The Lead Are you feeding your dog the right amount? The bag has a feeding chart. Your dog has a second opinion. You measure dinner, follow the feeding guide, and somehow your dog still looks personally offended by the portion. Those eyes are persuasive, but how can you tell whether the amount in the bowl is actually right? The answer involves more than the number on the bag. A quick body check and a closer look at what you serve can help you spot what’s working and what deserves a second look.

Dog Science
Does sleeping with your dog help you sleep better?
A dog beside you can make bedtime feel wonderfully cozy. Whether you actually sleep better is less clear: some studies find poorer sleep, while others find no significant difference. And having a dog in your bedroom isn’t the same as having one stretched across your legs.
For dogs, our presence may help. In a small experiment, nine dogs fell asleep sooner and slept better with their owner nearby than with a friendly stranger. But this happened in an unfamiliar laboratory, so it doesn’t tell us whether sharing a mattress helps them at home.
For you: Sharing a bed hasn’t been shown to consistently improve sleep. Notice how rested you feel the next morning.
For your dog: Being near you may help them settle, but the research doesn’t show they need your bed.
If you keep waking up: Try a dog bed beside yours. You can keep the company and reclaim some mattress.
Dog Life
Out & About
Would you rent someone else’s backyard for your dog?
Browse the photos, pick a time, bring a tennis ball. People are renting private yards by the hour so their dogs can explore without unfamiliar dogs joining the fun. Some bookings even come with a pool.
Paying for somebody else’s grass might sound a little extravagant—until the local dog park doesn’t work for your dog. And some hosts are offering rather more than a patch of lawn.

The Heartwarmer After 11 years with one family, Tillie needed another. After nearly eleven years together, Tillie’s family surrendered her and requested euthanasia, saying she was struggling to eat and stay on her feet. But back at the Pennsylvania SPCA, the senior dog walked into the hospital and greeted staff with a wagging tail. Soon, they were searching for someone who could give her a home again. Then Victoria came to meet her—with another senior dog by her side.

The Pack Has Spoken
Last week, we asked if your dog was dressing up for Halloween. It was a tie: 44.44% chose just a bandana or accessory, and another 44.44% voted for no costume this year.
The verdict: this pack prefers to keep the dress code casual.
This week's question
Where does your dog usually sleep at night?
Cast your vote. The Pack verdict returns next Sunday.
One last thing before you go.
This week, making room for a dog meant everything from booking a backyard to sharing a mattress. For Victoria, it meant welcoming Tillie. Her story stayed with us: someone met an older dog with nearly eleven years of history and decided they wanted to be part of whatever came next. We’re very glad they found each other.
See you next Sunday. Until then, give a dog you love the best seat in the house. If they request a larger dinner instead, we’ll refer them to this week’s lead.
