Sputnik's first Halloween costume lasted less than five minutes.
It was a cosmonaut outfit. Of course it was. With a name like Sputnik, a space-themed debut practically wrote itself. His mom made the costume, got her puppy ready for the party, and discovered one small flaw in the plan: she had seriously underestimated puppy energy.
The homemade outfit didn't survive the first five minutes. His mom remembers him as “a crazy pupper,” although the mission had started with considerable ambition: “wiener tower, this is space ranger sput, request to launch.” Unfortunately, puppy energy had other plans. Sputnik's career as a cosmonaut was brief. His costume career was only beginning.

From space explorer to movie star
In later years, Sputnik's mom turned to the movies she loved growing up. Suddenly, her dog wasn't just dressing for Halloween. He was taking on roles: Edward Scissorhands, Wednesday Addams, and whatever wonderfully unlikely character might come next.
The inspiration is nostalgic, but Sputnik supplies something no costume maker can plan: the facial expressions. His mom says those are what bring the characters to life. Looking at the results, it's easy to see why the tradition kept going.

But one Edward Scissordox wasn't enough. Sputnik's mom created a second take on the character, this time swapping the all-black look for a white shirt and gray trousers.

Wednesday Addams has one weakness
Wednesday was apparently a role Sputnik took very seriously. His mom joked that he stayed perfectly in character, right up until he heard they were going for a pup cup. Even Wednesday Addams has her weaknesses.
And the supporting cast deserved some attention, too. That mysterious, shaggy figure beside Wednesday? That's Ted Buddy, Sputnik's favorite brown bear plush, dressed as Cousin Itt. His beloved sidekick makes an appearance in many of Sputnik's costume adventures. Apparently, Halloween is a team effort in this household.

One particularly clever finishing touch came together at the last minute: a Funko Pop-style box, made from the cardboard packaging of an Addams Family Polly Pocket set his mom had ordered. One Addams Family collectible helped create another.
And when Halloween was over? Wednesday went right back into the box. The perfect ending to one very committed performance.

The party favorites
Then a triceratops took over the party
Of all his looks, Sputnik's mom thinks he especially enjoys two: the poop factory and the triceratops. The latter came with a performance nobody had to choreograph.
“He ran around the halloweenie party we were at in his triceratops costume like he owned the place.”
— Sputnik's mom
The mental image is hard to beat: a costumed dinosaur making the rounds with absolutely no concern for the fact that he is not, technically, a dinosaur. His mom likes to think Sputnik has a great sense of humor. That story makes a persuasive case.

The unexpected looks
No Ordinary Halloween Wardrobe.
Sputnik's wardrobe only gets more unexpected from there. One day he's a biodegradable loofah. The next, he's a waffle sundae with an imaginary ice-cream menu. And naturally, both costumes come with their own rather convincing sales pitches.
The waffle sundae's bestseller? “poonut butta with boo-berries toppin.” And the loofah promises to “clean bums & exfoliate.” Clearly, Sputnik has a promising career in advertising if the costume business ever slows down.

Back to outer space
Area 51 called. It was his birthday.
The costumes are only part of the production. For Sputnik's fifth birthday, his family went all in on a Roswell / Area 51 theme, bringing the little space explorer full circle.
His mom marked the occasion on Instagram with the wonderfully appropriate phrase “five earth years.” For a dog named after a satellite, a birthday with extraterrestrial flair somehow feels perfectly ordinary.

A dog of many characters
What makes Sputnik's costumes so special isn't just the wild wigs, tiny props, or wonderfully imaginative ideas. It's the creativity and love his mom puts into them, and the little dog who somehow makes every character his own. And, of course, there's always room for his favorite sidekick, Ted Buddy, in the cast. Whatever they dream up next, one thing is certain: there's only one Sputnik.
More Sputnik? Yes, please.
